Sparkman & Stephens Defiance 30

30ft 9.1m half Ton Cup Sloop, the S&S Defiance 30 is a great coastal cruising and club racing boat and famously so. She handles a seaway beautifully in rough conditions, and yet delights in light airs. She is built strong and capable, works well to windward and points high. Easily handled by two or set up properly, single handed.

"Rewind" has been loved and has thoroughly proven herself as a strong and capable boat with her recent owners thoroughly enjoying her over many years.
Recently she has been let go, and will require a new engine to be installed. For this reason, her price has been reduced dramatically, from what could have been a $40K boat, and she is being sold on a "as is, where is" basis.

She has a passionate owner, willing to go through the boat with you and assist. She comes with a lot of spares and sails and with a little time and love, can be brought back to her former glory and true value.

Remarks

As is where is. With no working engine, she will have to be towed out of her current marina berth.  Worthwhile project to do this old lady up. She has good bones and with new standing rigging and a new engine as her main expenses, she could be done up and sold at a profit, or make someone a very good cruising and racing boat, or live-aboard.

History:  Sparkman & Stephens:
For more than 90 years and over 2700 designs for pleasure, commercial and military use. Sparkman & Stephens' designs have won countless races from the America's Cup to local events and with it, international acclaim. The Sparkman and Stephens boats' strength and capability were more recently made famous in Australia by both Jesse Martin & Jessica Watson, sailing around the world in their S&S 34's. There is plenty of info online regarding this international https://sailboatdata.com/designer/sparkman-stephens/

Australian S&S 30 build History:
Jack Savage commissioned Swansons in Sydney to build the S&S 30 here in Australia, in the late 60's-70's. The first few prototype boats, were made out of timber. Savage then contracted Swansons to build a plug, which became the basis for glass production of the design.
Savage then went off to Melbourne and commenced production of the Savage Defiance 30.
Swansons kept some interest in the production, and produced a Swanson 30 from the plug.
Swarbricks in Fremantle then began producing a boat they called an S&S 30.(Swarbricks and Swansons collaborated from time to time and produced versions of each others boats).
So basically, these three boats are all the same hull, with the three producers putting on different deck/coach house arrangements. Savage has changed his design of deck/coachhouse along the way. The design has had a very long production run, being built into the 2000's.
After Savage finished building the Defiance, in the early 80s, the moulds were taken up by Des Lawson of '"Anything Boating" at Sawtell south of Coffs Harbour, he continued to the late 80s when both he and the moulds went to Brisbane. Another party continued to build them.
In the early stages, the Defiance was the Australian half ton champion and held the race record for the Darwin to Ambon race for some years.
Other relevant info: The Defiance class came about because of the rougher conditions in Australia. Doug Brooker had started to build the boat that was to be the mould and had all the frames made. They were chopped up and a new set made with more beam.
