Navigation lighting is the part with rules attached, and range matters: the NavLight LED 20Mt Tri-White is a 20-metre tri-colour and anchor fitting suited to a cruising yacht. How do I choose boat lighting and electrical gear that lasts?

Salt air, not use, is what kills marine electrics. That is why fittings are specified by ingress rating and material rather than by brightness or price, and why a stainless or marine-grade polymer housing outlasts a chromed alternative that looks identical on the shelf. Match voltage to your system, size cable to both current and run length so voltage drop does not dim a light at the far end of the boat, and fuse or breaker every circuit close to its source. What navigation lights do I need on my boat?

It depends on the length of the vessel and whether it is under power or sail, and the requirements are set by the marine regulator rather than by the retailer. Maritime Safety Queensland publishes the current rules for Queensland waters. Bring your vessel length and type into the store and we will match you to fittings with the right range and arc.

Are LED navigation lights better than incandescent?

For most owners, yes. LED navigation lights draw far less current, which matters on a boat at anchor overnight, and they have no filament to fail from vibration. Check that the fitting is certified for the range you need, because not every LED fitting meets the same visibility rating.

Why do my boat lights dim at the far end of the boat?

That is voltage drop, and it is a cable sizing problem rather than a fitting problem. Cable has to be sized to the current and the length of the run, so a light at the bow on undersized cable will be noticeably dimmer than the same fitting near the battery. Increasing the cable size fixes it.
