- Questions

What height stanchions do I need for my boat?

Standard stanchion heights are 600mm for most recreational boats on the Gold Coast and 750mm for offshore vessels or boats over 12 metres throughout Brisbane and SE Queensland. Regulations require lifelines at least 600mm above deck. Taller stanchions provide better safety but create more windage. Choose based on your vessel size and typical operating conditions.

How far apart should stanchions be spaced?

Space stanchions maximum 2.2 metres apart for proper lifeline support on the Tweed Coast, with closer spacing around corners and high-load areas. Australian standards require spacing that prevents lifelines from deflecting excessively under load. More stanchions cost more but provide better safety and lifeline rigidity. Plan spacing before drilling mounting holes.

What size cleats do I need for my dock lines?

Cleat size should be roughly one inch per 10 feet of boat length on the Gold Coast. A 7-metre boat needs 175-200mm cleats, while 10-metre boats require 250-300mm cleats throughout Brisbane and SE Queensland. Larger cleats handle bigger lines and higher loads. Undersized cleats lead to difficult line handling and potential cleat failure under storm loads.

Should I through-bolt or screw deck fittings?

Always through-bolt stanchions, cleats, and other loaded fittings using backing plates beneath the deck on the Tweed Coast. Screws pull out under load, especially in cored decks. Through-bolting with washers and backing plates distributes loads properly and prevents deck damage. Use marine sealant on all fastener holes to prevent water intrusion into deck cores.
