What capacity winch do I need?

Choose a winch rated at least 1.5 times your boat's total weight including fuel and gear. For a 500kg boat, use a 750kg minimum winch. Gold Coast boaters with steep ramps should go up to 2 times boat weight for easier cranking and added safety margin.

Should I choose manual or electric?

Manual winches suit boats up to 6 metres or 800kg and cost less. Electric winches make launching effortless for heavier boats, steep ramps, or frequent use throughout Brisbane and SE Queensland. Electric options need 12V power from your tow vehicle and cost more upfront.

What's the difference between strap and cable winches?

Strap winches use polyester webbing that's lighter, safer if it breaks, and popular for recreational use. Cable winches use galvanised wire rope that's more durable for heavy commercial use or harsh Tweed Coast conditions. Straps need replacement every few years while cables last longer but require regular inspection.
