Weld-on hull anode, aluminium 1.10kg
Description
Sacrificial anodes are essential for protecting all underwater metal parts on wooden, fibreglass, aluminium, and steel hulls. V-Quipment zinc anodes meet U.S. Mil-A-18001K specifications — the highest standard available. Anodes that do not meet this specification provide little or no protection.
V-Quipment aluminium anodes are an aluminium-indium-zinc alloy to Mil-A-24779(SH). All anodes are streamlined and mounted with studs (for welding to steel hulls) or through-hull bolts (for fibreglass and wooden boats). Studs and bolts are supplied separately.
Choosing the right anode material
For vessels primarily used in fresh water, aluminium anodes are recommended — aluminium has a greater potential difference with other metals than zinc, which is important as fresh water has higher electrical resistance than salt water. For salt or brackish water, zinc or aluminium anodes are suitable, though aluminium sacrifices faster in salt water. Magnesium anodes are not recommended as the potential difference is too great and may damage hull paint, particularly in brackish or salt water.
Anode selection guide by water type and hull material
| Water type | Wood | GRP | Aluminium | Steel | Sterndrive / Outboard |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh | Aluminium | Aluminium | Aluminium | Aluminium | Aluminium |
| Brackish | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Aluminium |
| Salt | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Zinc / Aluminium | Aluminium |
Inspect anodes annually. Replace when 50% sacrificed.
